CAIR-Oregon Calls On US Department Of Justice Civil Rights Division To Investigate Marion County Sheriff’s Office

(PORTLAND, OREGON, 6/5/18) – The Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Oregon) today called on the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division to investigate the Marion County Sheriff’s Office after video emerged showing a deputy repeatedly punching a transient man who was subdued. SEE: Raw: Deputy punches man repeatedly during Marion County arrest In a statement, CAIR-Oregon Spokesperson Zakir Khan said: “We need a US Department of Justice investigation into how law enforcement statewide handles people who are having mental health crises. Oregonians deserve law enforcement stakeholders who will take police accountability seriously, otherwise we are going to become witnesses to abuse of force situations weekly if not daily. “We again demand the following changes in the way law enforcement handles people in need of mental health treatment: “First, mental health counselors should be made available to all communities impacted by police abuse of force, including all of the individuals who were witness to this abuse of power and the victim himself. “Second, the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division should investigate this improper use of force and fully audit the Marion County Sheriff’s Office behavior when it comes to use of force situations. “Third, all training materials, videos, emails, and internal memos detailing Marion County’s policies on de-escalation and use of force should be released to the public. “Fourth, all disciplinary histories of the officers involved in this shooting should be released to the public. “Fifth, we invite the Oregon Attorney General’s office to convene a commission of community stakeholders to help develop better measures that make police forces accountable and transparent to the public. Belief in our police forces is waning because the community is consistently and persistently not being heard on a reform level.” CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims. La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos. – END – CONTACT: CAIR-Oregon Spokesperson Zakir Khan, 626-502-8450, zkhan@cair.com
